Sometimes known as the hidden disease Crohn’s Disease is a chronic condition that can develop in adolescence, often as young as 15 or 17 year old, as well as in the older person. Although it must be said that developing the condition in later life is rare.

No ‘respecter’ of people, Crohn’s Disease is widely spread throughout the country. Thankfully not all cases are sever and can be greatly controlled, especially in the early stages. However, those whose flare up, like mine, is more sever it can change your life style. Sometimes I think there is only one rule with Chron’s disease and that is when you’ve got it – you’ve got it for life’.

But with diligence and proper care you’ll learn to manage your lifestyle. Whilst there may be differences, in your lifestyle you’ll soon find a rhythm in life that is as equally rewarding and full as before the disease was diagnosed.

Recognising Crohn’s Disease Symptoms?

Affecting the stomach and the digestive process Crohn’s Disease will show itself in a number of different ways. Symptoms may include :-

    * diarrhoea,
    * abdominal pain,
    * weight loss and
    * loss of appetite.

Additional damage to the stomach and intestines can also be symptoms of this condition. Intestinal bleeding is another problem associated with this disease, which could lead to other problems.

The cause of Crohn’s Disease has been narrowed down to inflammation of the bowels or intestines. This inflammation could be caused by a couple of different things, including infection and problems with the immune system.

More recent research into how stress can bring on Crohn’s shows that whilst stress will not be the cause of the disease it will exasperate the situation when its developed. It is suggested that the more likely cause is some environmental shook to the body, such as a child going through puberty.

Treatment for Crohn’s Disease.

There are a number of treatment options available for Crohn’s Disease. Many times it can be controlled by making changes to one’s diet. Most often, however, prescription anti-inflammatory drugs must also be used. In the most severe cases, surgery is often the only way to find relief. It’s also important to use supplements to get the proper amount of nutrients into your body. Crohn’s Disease will often prevent the body from absorbing nutrients from the food you eat. This can lead to a host of other issues if it is not treated properly.

Crohn’s Disease is just one of many conditions that affect the digestive system. It is often confused with a similar disease, called colitis. This condition presents many of the same symptoms as Crohn’s Disease. In this case, however, the inflammation is located in the colon, or large intestines.

So far we have touched upon the causes and effects of Crohn’s disease on the body and we’ll pursue these in more detail else where in this site.. But the mental pressures that accompany a chronic condition have a significant part to play in managing your future.

You must not avoid knowing about the psychological affects of this disease. It is something you must address and make part of your recovery process.

and Finally

If you do no more than read the next few lines then switch to another site that’s OK BUT please, please read these next few lines.

I’ve read a number of sites that have words like - devastating - embarrassment – disabling – debilitating – extreme this and extreme that scattered liberally throughout their text. If you come across a site like this pass on, don’t stay.

I would respectfully question that if someone has written about Crohn’s in this fashion, they are simply out to shock.

I have Crohn’s disease. Its flare up was later in life and severe. Since its identification, and initial treatment I’ve learnt how to manage the symptoms. Today my life style is one that I would never have considered possible 5 years ago. My personal and family life is fuller and more rewarding now than any other time of my life. Indeed in the lists of inconveniences Crohn’s comes low.

When I speak to other Crohn’s sufferers I try to tell them that the only way I knew how to beat the disease was to understand it fully.

That you don’t beat it with a few pills; you manage Crohn’s disease with your mind and body and your starting point is knowledge.
